Audi A4 2.0T FSI

With an extensive facelift and a new engine, the range-topping Audi A4 makes for a compelling compact executive sedan

What's New
Strictly speaking, the latest Audi A4 is not an all-new model despite many claims to the contrary. Instead, extensive re-styling and re-engineering have gone into the German carmaker's best-selling model.

The effect though, is convincing and more importantly gives the A4 the means to keep up with its intended rival, the exceptional BMW 3 Series.

For starters, the engineers in Ingolstadt have eschewed the previous model's understated anonymity for some flash in the form of a daringly oversized single frame grille. This distinctive feature also visually aligns the A4 with the rest of Audi's current sedan range.

Its rear has also gone through a little nip and tuck that results in a rather fetching boot lid.

It takes a well-trained eye to tell the new car's interior from the previous model. This however, is no bad thing as the A4 still has one of the best-built cabins in the business.

How it Performs
Purists can also take pleasure in knowing that the improvements are more than skin deep where at least one model is concerned. The normally-aspirated 2.0-litre and turbocharged 1.8-litre versions soldier on in new clothing. It is the variant that should pique the interest of anyone who loves a good drive. That'll be us then!

First seen in the nose of the Volkswagen Golf GTI, the same turbocharged 2.0-litre FSI direct injection power unit also breathes new life into the A4. Although the same healthy 200bhp can be had from the Audi's powerplant, the latter employs a Multitronic continuously variable transmission rather than the six-speed Direct Shift Gearbox (DSG). This results in a smoother power delivery that better suits the A4's role as an executive sedan.

The improved comfort and refinement also means that the A4 2.0T FSI is deceptively quick as its posted performance figures attest.

How it Stacks Up
Those with a sportier disposition would probably appreciate the optional S-line body kit and 19-inch alloy wheel package our test car came with, while a more comfortable ride can be had when the wheels are kept to the 17-inch standard.

In any case, should you be inclined to the former, the 2.0T FSI engine should be more than able to do its rakish new looks justice.

The truly all-new A4 may be some years away, but for the time being this 'new' model should serve Audi just fine.
