Signal Flares in Imported Japanese Domestic Vehicles

LTA was recently alerted by the Singapore Police Force (SPF) on the signal flare found underneath the glove compartment of some parallel-imported Japanese vehicles.

SPF has advised that the signal flares are controlled items under the Arms & Explosives Act and that anyone who possessed, imported, or dealt in such a controlled item would require a licence under Section 13 of the Act. Failure to do so is liable upon conviction to a fine not exceeding $5000 and to imprisonment for a term, which may extend to 3 years.

New Japanese domestic vehicles parallel-imported into Singapore in the recent years (about 5 years) are involved.

LTA has advised parallel importers and distributors to inform their customers who had bought such vehicles from them, to remove and hand the signal flares over to the LTA. Affected vehicle owners can either hand over the signal flares directly at the Vehicle Engineering Department of the LTA, 10 Sin Ming Drive, or do so through the importers/distributors whom they had bought the vehicles from, or any of the 9 LTA-authorised vehicle inspection centres.

Parallel importers and distributors would also have to remove the signal flares from the imported vehicles that have yet to be registered or delivered to their customers and ensure that future vehicle imports are not equipped with signal flares.

Owners of parallel-imported Japanese domestic vehicles can call LTA's Vehicle Engineering Department at tel: 6553 5795 for more information about the signal flares.
