Road Safety Advice For
Pedestrians

Be Aware Of The
Road Environment. Pedestrians are vulnerable on the
road. Safety for you means staying out of the way
of vehicles. Use the pedestrian facilities
whenever they are available.
Don't take it for
granted that vehicles will stop for you at
designated pedestrian crossings. Look to check
that vehicles are stopping before crossing. Place
your hand vertically with the palm, facing the
on-coming traffic to indicate that you are
crossing the road.
Crossing The
Road. The
common causes of accidents involving pedestrians
are:
- crossing the
road heedless of the traffic
- crossing in
front or behind a vehicle which obstructs
one's view
- failing to
use an available pedestrian crossing
Pay careful
attention to traffic and the speed of moving
vehicles. Calmly judge the best time to move. Be
patient and be careful.
Helping Other
Pedestrians

The golden rule
for road crossing is: Look right, look left
and look right again before crossing.
Walk on pedestrian
foot-path if one is provided. If there is no
foot-path, walk in a single file and keep close
to the side of the road facing the traffic
whenever possible.

At night, wear
light coloured clothes and carry something
reflective; you want the motorist to see you. The
greater your visibility to the motorists or
motorcyclists, the safer you are.

Avoid crossing
between parked vehicles or at road bends. You
would not be able to see on-coming vehicles and
they would not be able to spot you.
