Study by AAA on Risky Driver Habits

In a recent study by the American Automobile Association, new insights were shared with regards to cognitive distractions that reduce the driver's concentration and increase hazard on the road.

Buy-and-rent car scheme is illegal: LTA

LTA said that the scheme ran afoul of its rules. Private car owners are not allowed to rent out their cars through rental companies,'' said an LTA spokesman, adding that this was illegal for both the car owner and the private cars without proper insurance coverage.

Big jump in number of illegally modified cars

The number if car owners caught for illegally modifying their vehicles is shooting up. Most modifications wre to the cars' exhaust systems, windows and lights changes typically preferred by illegal racers who wants to appear flashy. In the first six months fo this year, the Land Transport Authority (LTA) has already taken 1,381 motorists to task for this offence.

Enhancements to the Off-Peak Car (OPC) Scheme

The Land Transport Authority (LTA) has completed its review of the Off-Peak Car (OPC) scheme and three new initiatives wiill be implemented to enhance the scheme:

  1. From 23 November 2009, e-Day Licence to replace the current paper licence, which offers greater flexibility with more channels for purchase and post-usage payment. The e-Day Licences can be bought online at the ONE.MOTORING portal, AXS sations and using mobile-SMS service, in addition to Singapore Post outlets and the Automobile Association of Singapore offices.
  2. Revisions to the OPC scheme to allow unrestricted usage on Saturdays and on the eves of five public holidays, namely New Year, Lunar New Year, Hari Raya Puasa, Deepavali and Christmas. Existing OPC owners can choose to opt into this revised shceme to enjoy the extended hours in exchange for reduced tax discounts at an administrative fee of $100.
  3. Cash rebates for conversion of normal cars to the new OPC scheme of up to $1, 100 for every six months' registration as an OPC. Instead of receiving a lump sum under the old scheme, by end January 2010, owners who have converted their car into an OPC will enjoy a cash rebate of up to $1, 100 for every six months' registration until the car reaches 10 years old.
